For the majority of "civilization" we had kings and penniless serfs who couldn't even cut down a tree in the "King's forest" to keep his family from freezing to death. It seems the billionaires want to return us to those days.

Just want to say how much I appreciate you offering free content, because part of this shift is the subscription model where you get rudimentary bare-bones services for free and everything else is an ever-more-expensive subscription that you have to keep paying forever. The true cost of everything is eye-popping.

I do firmly believe writers should be paid, to be clear, and paid very well! I make my living as a writer and editor. I'm just finding Substack to be a little problematic in the actual user experience of it as a profit center with ever more aggressive marketing and wish for a way there could be more bundling like - wait for it - like a magazine with an editor. At the same time I'm grateful, in a very very tough financial situation right now, for your generosity.

I get it, as a fellow writer. If you feel like sharing the piece with friends that’s a way to give back, too!

I totally agree. I would love to fully fund more than a dozen Substack authors but that would cost over $1,000 per year. My subscription to the Wall Street Journal is less than $200 per year and is delivered 6 days a week to my home. In order for all the authors to survive a new model needs to be used. I'm sure they would rather have 1000 readers paying $1 per year than 10 readers paying $100 per year but the second option is now how it works. I hope someone solves this problem. It really needs all the boggers to get together and figure out a better model where they are adequately compensated and they have the largest audience.

This just makes me want to cry. Why are we so misguided? Why are the rich and powerful so cruel and hateful? 🥺

On a more positive note, your novel looks very interesting. Can't wait to read it.

Another great piece. Shared (as usual) I was going to jump in with something, but you got there without me. LOL

I was going to add that ownership of private property is the great lie of capitalism. If you think you own your house, try not paying your property taxes. If you think you own your car, try not paying your registration and so on. It's like beer. You don't buy it, you rent it. LOLOL

Why do I think your headline, lede and article won't be fit for the Evening News (or da morning\mourning news or da Wall Street views & Global Blues....)? Trillions of anything are so hard to quantify. Most national treasuries throw in the towel (or trowel..) Keep doze EXTRAS! a'comin.
