I was in a Metro station in DC last night, just passing through town on my way back to Virginia, but there is already a feeling that things are different. People are keeping their heads down, just trying to get through what is hopefully a short occupation.
"In my American family history, no one ever had that happen. Maybe that’s why so many of us still can’t see the jackboots at our own door. But our nation’s capital is literally under military occupation."
Same for my American family. I think that's why my parents were so easily pulled in by Fox effect and MAGA rhetoric. They are last wave Silents, born in 1942 and 1945. They know nothing from WWII other than the post-war propaganda and McCarthyism they were raised on.
"Tyranny doesn’t arrive with a cinematic soundtrack. Nothing appears off here in my overwhelmingly white Midwestern small town. Most people are busy going to work, buying groceries and running the kids to soccer practice."
The same is true here to an extent, if liberals in a college town are more informed. People know what's happening to varying degrees, but no one knows what to do. So, people mostly just go about their lives. To be honest, I'm not sure either. A revolution only works if many others join you.
By the way, if you want to know what the dress rehearsal for the present fascist coup looked like, check out Rachel Maddow's "Prequel." It's impressive journalism that is rarely done these days. It is amazing how close we came to having become an all of Nazi Germany.
It's easy to forget that a century ago fascism was something new. Most people, including most Jews at the time, didn't see it coming or didn't fully realize what it was. It will be like that again because it won't be like Nazism. This new authoritarianism could be much more destructive.
The tech broligarchs have called it the Butterfly Revolution. There scheme is to dismantle the entire system and then build technofeudalism in the ashes. Rather than fascism where big gov controls big biz, this could finally be the culmination of inverted totalitarianism, where power runs the other way around with big biz in control.
With the budget for ICE increasing to where it will be larger than most country's military budget, I'm afraid it will become Trump's private army (brownshirts). Might even change the ICE from Immigration and Customs Enforcement to Immigration and Citizenship Enforcement. Any citizen not toeing the line will be sent on a flight to a Sudan prison. That'll keep everyone in line.
Okay Michelle. (Spinning off of my Notes comment to you from earlier today). I’m feeling what you’re doing here. I like what I’m reading so far. We share the same politics and social justice mindset and passion.
A great post, Michelle. It was not easy for us growing up. We survived, but there are scars that are just part of us. We are dedicated to getting the scum out of here. I see nothing but protesting here on out. For you, 108 protest signs for the fight. This is critical for Occupied D.C. Many signs are revised to sing. 🎶. I recommend using a local printer, but national print companies offer great pricing, shipping included. There is time to get the lot printed for your protest group, assuming you have a gathering of 300 to 1,000. This would help fill the hands of the signless.

That food on the fence posts. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
We should remember this tactic. The day may come.
