My son, who makes good money as an investment analyst, is envious of my small teacher pension! And I have to agree. Planning is made much easier when you know what you're getting month by month, year by year (with a small COLA raise)!

I agree. My teaching pension is absurdly small and has no COLA, but I can count on receiving it every month forever. If I had no savings to augment it, I’d starve, though.

My son has the opposite view, he would rather have the opportunity to make as much money as he can, rather than to have his opportunities limited by a set salary. I guess everyone is different.

These posts focus on income equality but it must be noted that you can only have income equality with equal opportunity to achieve this goal. Without the opportunity there can be no equality. Communism tries to "force" equality but it results in a different kind OF inequality. The members of the communist party are the "elites" and rule over the non communist population. With communism you just replace one eilite with another elite, the populace is still ruled by an elite, just of another name. Equality of Opportunity is the only way to achieve "real" equality for the people.
