"I don’t like imagining the horror of falling into a pot of molten iron. But that’s what happened to one man."

Things like that used to happen all the time to bad guys at the climax of superhero comics. Dramatic, no doubt, but not something that should happen in real life, I agree.

In this case, it was just a young man trying to make a living.

Very sad.

Canada's version of OSHA is called Worker's Compensation, and it is also dealt out on very arbitrary terms.

I have been around my fair share of industrial areas and work places. I have worked in places that outright scared me and when I threatened to expose them, they tried to make life very bad for me. In one instance, I just left as soon as I could find another job. OSHA is a good thing but good luck getting them out to a workplace or job site. By the time they show up (if they do at all), the damage is done and buried. Not all instances were like this, but most were, and these shady companies know this. The U.S. is at an inflection point and things are only going to get worse now before we can make it better. We're almost at the bottom but not quite there yet. It's these last few feet that are the worst. Once these wannabe affluent Americans lose all of their stock market investments, they will wake up to the new reality, but it will be too late by then.

What's next after no OSHA? Removing the need to carry workers' compensation insurance? As you said, some companies will care for their workers without being asked to. Many won't. If there are two manufacturers and one protects workers but pays lower wages, does it lose employees who need a solid paycheck? If these companies are traded on the public market, does the need to deliver profits start to mean a company cuts corners wherever it can if it's not required to ensure worker safety? So much of what is being done right now feels short-sighted.

We had to survive on workers comp once and it was a true hardship. And the GOP bitches that people are taking advantage — people who can scarcely survive.

I’m a paying subscriber now! Had $32 in my checking account (you get it) and pay day is tomorrow! I am a certified housing counselor as long as HUD exists, and make only 17.30 an hour. I’m proud of what I do but I also wish I was valued for it! Thanks for everything you write about ❤️
